AK Dan Gwang Chil at Rio Theatre, 1660 E. Broadway June 19, 8 p.m.
After watching performance videos by Ak Dan Gwang Chil, or ADG7, it’s easy to understand the appeal.
On its latest album, 2020s Such is Life, piri and saenghwang flute/woodwind player Lee Man Wol solos like the most shredding metalhead lead guitarist, while percussionist Sunwoo Barabarabarabam mixes all manner of unique beats together into driving and melodic tunes. Kim Yak Dae on the daeguem long bamboo flute, Won Meongongmaru on the 12-string plucked zither called a gayaguem and bowed ajaeng zither player Donghoon Kim round out the orchestra.
Q: What are some of the things you are singing about? Do folk tales and myths form some of the song content?: Most of ADG7’s music is rooted in shamanic music and minyo . Sometimes we create the music incorporating Pansori, which is more of a storytelling genre. This makes completely new melodies inspired by traditional vocals and traditional instruments. Bingle Bingle, Noza Noza, Hee Hee are songs we composed like that.
