“This is a big thing, a huge moment, the first time we’re assuming the leadership on Nora Hendrix Place,” said June Francis, chair of Hogan’s Alley Society. “This has been part of our vision.”The temporary modular housing building is on city-owned land beside the Georgia Viaduct, the area once known as Hogan’s Alley, the focal point of Vancouver’s Black community until it was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the viaducts.
“PHS is incredibly proud of the work we did to get Nora Hendrix Place up and running. … So we are sad to leave,” Fader said. “But I fully support and understand it is the right thing for a Black-led organization to be the ones overseeing housing and other services for Black community members. … We know we’re leaving it in good hands.”
“When Black, Brown, Indigenous people and organizations are leading the development and delivery of services to their own people, they are guided by knowledge of harms perpetrated against their communities, as well as the lived experiences and real needs of their community members,” Gerges said. “This is a step forward in my mind and it gives me much hope.”Article content
