There wasn’t a single F50 foiling catamaran whizzing across the ocean at breakneck speeds when I looked out from Point Pleasant Park the other day. From where I stood, I couldn’t see a ferry, tug, cruise ship, or naval frigate either.
The Mi’kmaq who, since time immemorial, have had permanent settlements there, but also the British, German, and Swiss colonists arriving to counterbalance the great French fortress in Cape Breton. The swaggering privateers, carrying the king’s letters of marque, as well as the devil-may-care clipper ship crews making for port here during the Great Age of Sail.
From the Angus L. Macdonald bridge which, looking north and south in the early evening, offers what has to be one of the country’s great urban vistas. Our best-known song is set here. So, it is no surprise that the romance of the harbour gets into a person’s blood and soul. Because down there — watching container ships from exotic locales come and go, seeing a tall wooden ship emerge from the fog as if through a crack in time — a person is transported.
