That, in Mahar’s view, tell us a lot about Trudeau: his penchant throughout his career to sometimes demonstrate bad judgement; but also his resilience, as well as his ability to “skate backwards” which he demonstrated “in a very painful and difficult moment, to acknowledge his own privilege and to eat the shame.”
Mahar’s book, though, is as authoritative as it is newsworthy. In it, we read of Trudeau’s gilded upbringing, but also his inability to live up to his father Pierre’s stunning academic standards, and how, as the eldest child in a household where the parents went at it tooth and nail “he gets a kind of maturity in a way … as the guy trying to keep it all together.”
“He looked at me, squaring his shoulders,” recounts Maher. “‘Oh,’ he said, ‘I never forget I’m a Trudeau.’ He looked confident, poised, his eyes fixed. Huh, I thought. He’s like a prince.” The mask has come in handy. Maher’s book takes us through the triumphs but also the low points in Trudeau’s life and career, the latter including the foreign missteps in dealings with China and India and the image-denting developments at home, such as the SNC-Lavalin and Jody Wilson-Raybould episodes.Overall, Maher declares Trudeau a “very effective prime minister” and not just because he has won a trio of federal elections.
