I have never watched Leslie-Anne Young, the Olympic kayaker, muscle her way across the water. Just as I have never seen Kirk Johnson, once a world heavyweight boxing championship contender, or Dwayne Provo, the former CFL defensive back, both from North Preston, demonstrate their speed, strength, and grit. But Jamie Bone, the fourth athlete in the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame inductee class of 2024, and I go way back.
He had grown taller and bigger by the time the next season rolled around. Goucher, who would go on to become a provincial MLA, again pointed him towards the defensive backfield, until a teammate told the coach to watch the 13-year-old throw the ball. My dad had driven me to the game. In the parking lot by the field, he had a wonderful surprise: his old Acadia university basketball teammate Jack Bone and his wife Arlene.
At that point, he slung the ball side-arm. Which was a good thing because, in time, he would throw a football well enough to make the Dallas Cowboys think that he could replace Roger Staubach as the quarterback of America’s most famous football team. Over the years Bone and I have talked about what happened next. As best as we can figure out my coach must have started yelling for me to get back on the field. Which, being the obedient young man that I was, I did, buckling up my chin strap as I left the bench and lit out in pursuit of the Packer quarterback.
