Finally a good day at the office for Bowden Francis. He wasn’t totally sharp with his command, walking a couple, and he didn’t blow them away, with four strikeouts and six swings and misses on 66 pitches, but the Rays really weren’t on him at all either.

They only squared him up a couple of times in the first five innings, once in the first that was caught on a line by Bo Bichette, and second in the fifth with a Tanner Murray liner off the wall that would be their first hit of the afternoon. The offence got a couple off Taj Bradley in the first. Will Wagner worked a walk, advanced to second on a throwing error by Bradley, and came around to score on an Anthony Santander line single to right. Bichette would add a single and Andres Gimenez would reach on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Santander to come around to score. They went quiet for a while after that. A Wagner double in the second was stranded, as were singles by Bichette in the third and Alejandro Kirk in the fourth. Wagner lead off the fifth with his third hit of the afternoon . Vladimir Guerrero jr. hit one of his own to put two on for Santander, who doubled off the left field wall to plate both and extend the lead to four. Bichette and Andres Gimenez followed with a single and a walk, respectively, to load the bases with none out. George Springer hit into a double play, though, and Daulton Varsho grounded out to prevent them from further capitalizing. The Rays caught up to Francis a bit in the sixth. Jonathan Aranda lead off with a solo home run, cutting their deficit to 4-1. The next three batters singled, ground out, and were hit on the hand, putting two men on with one out. That was the end for Francis. Chad Green took over. A line single loaded the bases, but Green got a pair of pop ups to escape without more damage. On the day, Francis’ ERA fell from 10.80 to 7.63. It wasn’t a complete turnaround but it was pretty encouraging. The Jays threatened in the bottom of the sixth, with Kirk reaching on a throwing error and Wagner walking, but weren’t able to score. Mason Fluharty pitched the top of the seventh, giving up a ground ball single but then picking the runner off and striking out two. A Gimenez single was stranded in the bottom half. Nick Sandlin hit a batter and issued a walk in the eighth, but got out of it with the help of a caught stealing by Christian Bethancourt. The Jays went down in order in their half. Tommy Nance closed it out, working around a single and a walk to secure the 4-1 win. It’s another home game tomorrow. Jose Berrios will represent the Jays against Joe Ross and the Phillies. First pitch is set for 1:07pm ET.
