Jamal Khashoggi is at the top of this month's OneFreePress 10 Most Urgent list by RandallLane

Share to twitterOver the past two weeks, Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman has swanned his way through the G-20, meeting with world leaders—and basking in the kind words of President Trump, who held a personal breakfast with him—at the same time that a new United Nations report placed the blame for the cold-blooded killing ofjournalist Jamal Khashoggi squarely at his feet.

This month’s list features journalists from Mexico and, for the first time, China, countries which rank among the worst for imprisonment and death of truth-seekers worldwide. In China, 47 journalists were in prison as of 2018, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, and so far this year CPJ has confirmed three deaths in Mexico while continuing to investigate four others.

There are also some positive developments. Nicaraguan journalists Miguel Mora and Lucía Pineda of TV station 100% Noticias, who were imprisoned after a police raid of their digital and cable newsroom in December 2018, were on June 11. The two had appeared on the 10 Most Urgent lists in the months of April, May and June. The dubious charges against them for “inciting violence and hate” and “promoting terrorism” were dropped.

Journalists Lucia Pineda and Miguel Mora celebrate their release on June 11, 2019 after spending almost six months in jail in Managua.Hopefully, we’ll see more resolutions soon. What follows is July’s full list, produced in partnership with 33 global media organizations, the Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Women’s Media Foundation.
