, "It’s not that we’re the first municipality to address this issue. It’s that we’re the first municipality in the U.S to say that this is not just an economic issue – this is a gender equity issue. It’s a public health and hygiene issue, and needs to be addressed by the government of the municipality as a public health and hygiene issue and we’re going to do that by making all of our public bathrooms with these products accessible.
Students at Keith Middle School in New Bedford, Massachusetts also had to go to the school nurse to get pads or tampons. Now, they're advocating for better and free access in school bathrooms. “So she and her mom then went home and made pads out of socks and hair ties,” said Pouliot Latham. “So she had something, right? She made something. But there was no way she was going to school with a sock pad, so she stayed home all week … poverty is real and this is a real effect of living with poverty."
Victoria is in 9th grade at New Bedford High School. She also pushed for free menstrual products at Keith Middle School. She said she remembers the anxiety she felt when she first got her period in sixth grade and she didn’t have menstrual products on her.
