The fire department, DFO and people of all ages rushed to save the dolphins that were stranded in the mudflats of The Joggins

People of all ages rushed to the scene in Digby on the afternoon of Nov. 4 after it was discovered that 16 dolphins were stranded in the mudflats of an area known as The Joggins. MICHAEL RENAUD PHOTODIGBY, NS – When people heard about the stranded dolphins in the mudflats of The Joggins off Digby on Friday afternoon, Nov. 4, first their hearts sank, then they quickly sprang to action.

“We are happy to report that all 16 dolphins eventually were ushered into the water,” the department posted on its Facebook page late in the afternoon. “We are hopeful once the tide keeps rising, they will safely make their way back out to sea.”Still, on Friday it was the community response that was being celebrated by those on the scene and those who heard about what took place. This message was posted to social media to make people aware of the situation: “Urgent.

“It was quite the scene,” she added. “They couldn’t go out with four wheelers so they literally walked out to the middle of the flats with buckets and tarps and shovels. They put the dolphins on the tarps and they hauled them across the beach. It was quite a sight.”A smaller of the stranded dolphins is covered to keep it wet and pulled to the water by sled in Digby on Nov. 4.

Adrien LeBlanc, the deputy chief of the Digby Fire Department, says the biggest task was trying to keep the dolphins upright, while also keeping them wet. “After discussing the situation with these colleagues and providing information about how to safely respond to the situation and handle these animals, they, along with members of the public, were able to return all animals back into the water.”

“People just did what they could,” he said. “There were some dolphins that we couldn’t move at all so we just tried to keep them comfortable.”“You had probably 200 yards of half-decent, hard bottom, and then the whole basin was 14 inches of mud. Sometimes you were right up to your knees in it. It was very hard going,” he said.
