Let’s have a respectful conversation that considers all perspectives
A section of West Mabou Beach in Cape Breton has been proposed as the site of a new golf club by Cabot Cape Breton. — SaltWire Network file photoRodney MacDonald is the community liaison for Cabot Cape Breton, and a former premier of Nova Scotia. He is a resident of Mabou, Cape Breton.Nova Scotia’s rural regions are beautifully distinct and diverse — in history, culture, geography and economy. For our province to thrive we must continue to grow, and not just in Halifax.
Last week, Cabot began conversations with the community of Mabou about a potential golf development there. I am acting as community liaison for Cabot, sharing the company’s vision with residents, answering questions, and asking for their ideas and feedback. Cabot has been very intentional in its approach: start with the community. Listen. Let the feedback inform the process.
For background, this project would require a Crown land lease from the province of Nova Scotia for a portion of land located within the West Mabou Beach Provincial Park. This area is classified as a natural environment park; a place that, under the law, “incorporates natural landscapes in combination with outstanding recreational resources.” Golf courses like Highlands Links, Fundy, Avondale, Banff and others all exist within provincial and national parks. This is commonplace.
The people of Mabou have a unique opportunity before them. Cabot’s work in Inverness gives us an idea of what we can expect to see in Mabou: more jobs, economic growth, investment in our community, continuous measures aimed at protecting sand dunes from coastal erosion, resources like nesting boxes to protect and increase wildlife habituation, and investment in resources to help the community and visitors appreciate and experience Mabou’s natural beauty in a safe and sustainable way.
