Due to circumstances beyond his control, Don Baker of Grafton says he won’t be able to build a small house on his farmland until spring, even with Kings County council potentially giving final approval to his development agreement in October. - Kirk StarrattCOLDBROOK, N.S. — A homeless Grafton man denied a building permit for a small house due to his agricultural land zoning is another step closer to breaking ground.
Following the vote, Baker said even if he gets his final approval in October, he could begin building until spring. Contractors he had lined up had to move on to other projects as Baker’s plans got pushed back. Baker suffered a fall this summer and is currently recovering from his injuries. It has hampered some of his farming activities, but he remains determined and said things are going well considering the situation.
At the September monthly session, Kings County councillors voted unanimously in favour of giving first reading to a development agreement with Don Baker of Grafton. The agreement would allow him to build a small house on his farmland as a new, bona-fide farmer. - Kirk Starratt
