Environment Canada warns of significant snowfall, up to 40 centimeters, expected to impact eastern Ontario and western Quebec starting Wednesday night. Ottawa-Gatineau region faces the brunt of the storm, prompting warnings against travel.

Environment Canada has issued winter storm and snowfall warnings for all of eastern Ontario and western Quebec, starting Wednesday night and continuing into Thursday. The Ottawa -Gatineau region faces a particularly severe storm, with predictions of up to 40 centimeters of snow. This significant weather event is expected to bring the heaviest snowfall to Ottawa since nearly 48 centimeters fell in the past.

The most impactful warnings are concentrated along the Ottawa River, extending as far south as Bancroft, Perth, and Russell. Forecasters anticipate 30 to 40 centimeters of snow, with potential accumulation rates of up to five centimeters per hour at the storm's peak during the night.Western Quebec is also bracing for substantial snowfall, with 25 to 40 centimeters expected, potentially heavy and accompanied by strong winds. Communities south of Ottawa, including Alexandria, Cornwall, Tweed, Westport, and Winchester, can anticipate 20 to 30 centimeters of snow. Further along the Highway 401 corridor, encompassing Belleville, Brockville, Kingston, and Prince Edward County, a snowfall warning is in effect, with predictions of 15 to 25 centimeters of snow and possible ice pellets overnight. The storm is projected to move in a northeast direction, initially impacting Lake Ontario. Hourly forecasts indicate it could arrive near Kingston around 6 p.m. and reach Ottawa after 8 p.m. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated overnight in eastern Ontario. The storm is expected to end Thursday morning in Prince Edward County, gradually subside in the afternoon in the rest of eastern Ontario, and potentially linger into Thursday evening in western Quebec. Environment Canada strongly advises against travel under eastern Ontario's winter storm warnings and encourages drivers in other affected areas to adjust their driving styles accordingly. Motorists who must travel are urged to inform someone of their plans before departing, charge their cell phones, and carry essential supplies such as food, water, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit with medication. The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP, represented by Const. Shawn Peever, emphasizes the importance of drivers slowing down, maintaining ample space between vehicles, clearing snow from their vehicles, and keeping scrapers, washer fluid, and a small shovel readily available
