Vancouver Island experiences a significant snowfall, with Nanaimo receiving over 30 centimeters. The city implements snow clearing operations, while community advocates highlight concerns about the lack of shelter space for vulnerable individuals during the winter weather.

Winter has finally arrived on Vancouver Island and in Nanaimo’s Uplands neighbourhood, it means clearing upwards of 30 centimetres of snow.

The snowfall left a winter wonderland across much of central Vancouver Island. In Nanaimo it meant a number of closed parks, and while road clearing was continuous, many people got the message and stayed home, with just a few crashes around the Comox Valley. In Nanaimo, the city says it’s making a lot of progress with about 25 pieces of equipment clearing snow.

“We made really good progress. The weather’s been very cooperative today. Snowfall stopped early this morning so we’ve been able to get into the residential areas,” he said Tuesday. Advocates say a man arrived at the Risebridge shelter at 3 a.m. Tuesday. They had no room but felt compelled to take him in any way and while the Hub drop-in centre has space for 20, that’s far from supporting the need.
