IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — When Vince Clifford stepped outside to start shovelling the 20-some centimetres of snow that fell on his driveway Tuesday, he instantly noticed downed telephone lines dangling outside his home.
“This is crazy weather. I mean, yes it was cold, but I was going around in my shorts ,” he added with a laugh. “We just went over to the hill off Hospital Street for about an hour and a half,” said 10-year-old Easton Cameron, outside with his pals Noah Zidan, 10, Jonah MacIsaac, 10, and Easton’s brother Clark, six.Snowblowers and shovels were in full force as residents worked their way through clearing out driveways or around their street-parked vehicles.
The mix of snow and winds also caused widespread power outages, the bulk of which occurred in the CBRM. Restoration times, according to Nova Scotia Power’s outages map, were estimated to take place as late as 11 p.m. Tuesday. According to Allister Aalders, weather specialist for the SaltWire Network, the system that brought heavy wet snow to much of Cape Breton in the morning, which turned to rain by the afternoon, essentially played out “as expected.”
