CONTRIBUTEDGLACE BAY — Zachary Simms wasn't waiting for a cosy hospital room to make his first appearance in the world.
Like a scene from a movie, Zachary's father Eric Simms was speeding down the highway from their Glace Bay home to the hospital, going at least 120 km/hour and weaving in and out of traffic. After an examination, they were told Poirier was barely dilated and there would be a long time before baby Zachary, the sixth child in the couple's blended family, would arrive. They packed up and went home. When Simms told her he needed a minute to brush his teeth she told him there was no time; Poirier had a feeling it wasn't going to be a long labour.
She stood as much as she could and delivered her baby on the heated front seat of their SUV. Hoping the heat of the seat would keep the newborn warm since she didn't have any blankets to wrap him in, she rubbed his back until he cried and did what she could to soothe him with the umbilical cord attached when they arrived at the emergency department.Simms sped up to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital emergency department doors, parked and ran inside for help.
Nurses were quick to get the mom and new baby inside and taken to a room for a doctor's examination. Both were in good health.
