Is help on the way for the Ottawa Senators?
That’s the burning question as the Senators prepare for their home opener Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Philadelphia Flyers in front of a standing-room-only crowd at the Canadian Tire Centre.Coming home after a 5-3 loss against the Carolina Hurricanes in their National Hockey League season opener Wednesday, the Senators had Thursday off to prepare for back-to-back games that will also include a matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday at 7 p.m.
Either Norris or MacEwen are ready to play against Philly or the Senators can use an emergency recall to bring up a player from the American Hockey League affiliate in Belleville who’s making less than $875,000 U.S. The top candidate in that scenario would be winger Jiri Smejkal, who was a standout in camp and was a last cut.
While it had been expected Norris would suit up for three or four preseason games, that scenario never materialized because he “tweaked” the shoulder during the captain’s skates before camp. Then he had another minor setback in camp, which didn’t allow him to suit up at all. Dorion has been working on trying to find the right fit through trade or another roster move so Smith and his staff have options for filling out the roster.
You can’t get too caught up in a loss to a team considered to be a contender for the Eastern Conference title this year. The way the Hurricanes beat the Senators was the exact formula Carolina has employed with success on many nights, and Ottawa players didn’t react well during the second period.
