Glace Bay volunteer firefighters give oxygen to a cat who suffered smoke inhalation during a fire on August 31. CONTRIBUTED / DAWN GRANTGLACE BAY, N.S. — A family with three small children was displaced after a fire Tuesday morning that started in the kitchen of their Glace Bay home.
Two of the family's three cats died due to the fire. Firefighters were able to get the third cat in stable condition on scene and the cat was taken by police to Animal Medical Centre in Sydney. Glace Bay Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Chant said the fire at 157 West Ave. has been deemed accidental."Firefighters remained on scene for approximately one hour to check for extension and removal of smoke."
Neighbours watched the volunteer firefighters put out the fire and provide oxygen to the cat that survived until it could be transported to an animal hospital."They worked on the kitty for more than 20 minutes before a firefighter scooped him up, then cradling it in one arm holding the oxygen mask on his face and carrying the oxygen tank in the other as he ran to a police car and they sped off. I was so touched I had to take a picture and give them the credit they deserve.
