Opinion: The Lions will have a new head coach, a new starting quarterback, and 13 other new starters. They’ll also have a new kicker and a new long snapper. Of the 75 players invited to camp, some …

Ed Hervey is starting his second full year as general manager of the B.C. Lions and while there is much uncertainty as the Leos head to training camp in, yikes, two weeks, one thing is clear.

Of the 75 players invited to camp, some 45 will be first-year Lions. That doesn’t include another group of eight or so who were around the CFL team last season but couldn’t be described as regulars unless you believe Ebenezer Ogundeko’s one game qualifies him as a regular. “Vancouver’s been so accustomed to Wally, we all have, and that was the one constant in an ever-changing league,” says Hervey. “You looked out West and you knew Wally was going to be there. In reimagining the Lions, Hervey has virtually taken the lineup and the organization down to the studs, building something that makes last year’s renovation seem like a standard paint job.

Collectively, the moves can be described as high risk, high reward, but they also had the desired effect at the box office. In the aftermath of Reilly’s signing, the Lions reported a significant spike in season-ticket sales. “It starts there,” said Hervey. “It starts with Mike. You have to have a player other players gravitate toward.

“I don’t know if culture change is what the organization needed,” he said. “I believe the culture had been sustained for a long time and been successful.
