Michael Dyck took a circuitous route back to the WHL, but it has paid off

There is a familiar pattern to the career arc of most coaches and for the first act of his coaching life, Michael Dyck followed that pattern diligently.

Instead, Dyck became the head coach of the Lethbridge Wolfpack and if you’ve never heard to that outfit, it’s because it’s an atom team comprised largely of nine and 10-year olds. He also became a day trader in agricultural commodities and, rest assured, coaching 10-year-olds and trading corn and soy beans aren’t entries you generally find on most coaches’ resumes.

No matter. After Byram, Dyck might be the best pro prospect in the Giants’ organization. In his first year behind the bench, he guided the G-men to a 48-15-3 record in the regular season and three straight series wins in the playoffs while being named the Western Conference coach of the year.

“I had three names on my list and the only reason Michael wasn’t at the top is because I wasn’t sure he’d take it,” says Parneta. But, in working with his son’s teams, he was also exposed to new methods and new ideas. Playing hard, playing with discipline and playing for your teammates aren’t exactly new concepts but Dyck gets his point across without going all Punch McLean on his kids.
