Durham Regional Council is taking the first step toward redevelopment two Durham Regional Local Housing Corporation sites in Oshawa.

One site is made up of 12 semi-detatched units on Christine Crescent, near Dean Avenue and Wilson Road South.Regional council is endorsing the feasibility analysis for the redevelopment of the sites. The region wants to turn both into new mixed income neighbourhoods including rent-geared-to-income, affordable and market rental housing.

The semi-detatched homes on the Christine Crescent site will be replaced with a mid-rise apartment buildings and stacked townhouses totally approximately 160 units. The Malaga Road townhouses will be replaced with two new mid-rise buildings as well as stacked and back-to-back townhouses totally 440 units.The region is embarking on an initiative to revitalize and redevelop the DRLCH’s community housing sites. In 2022, regional council passed a resolution identifying several of the properties for revitalization.

“Durham Regional Council’s endorsement of this feasibility analysis marks a pivotal step toward revitalizing the Christine Crescent and Malaga Road properties,” said Durham Regional Chair John Henry. “We aim to create vibrant, diverse, and healthy neighborhoods, ensuring that existing residents in Malaga and Christine Crescent, and those seeking affordable housing, benefit from our commitment. By replacing outdated units with modern designs, we’re elevating the quality of life for all.
