The Humane Society of Durham Region is out with a reminder that Canada Day fireworks can frighten your pets.

They say the unexpected bangs and flashing lights can disorient animals and, in extreme cases, chase them away from home. “Even if your dog doesn’t show signs of distress, resist the urge to bring them with you to watch a fireworks display,” noted representatives. “Dogs are far more sensitive to the sounds and smells produced by fireworks than we are and would be happier in the quiet of their home.”

They recommend keeping your pets indoors while fireworks are let off. It helps to have a safe place for your pet to feel at ease, and to keep your curtains closed. You should also close your windows and doors so your pet can’t escape. If you need to take your dog for a walk, you should keep them leashed to prevent them from bolting and getting lost.“We know how distressing it can be for families to have a beloved pet go missing,” said Kassie Dickson, Animal Behaviour Coordinator with the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society, in a release. “Take extra precautions this weekend, especially if you’re visiting somewhere your pet might not be as familiar with, such as a cottage or campground.
