Buildings in central Valencia are mostly between four and eight storeys, with 12 storeys in areas bordering major open spaces such as public squares. As is typical in Europe, buildings go right to the sidewalk and abut each other. That maximizes density at a human scale. Here, developers prefer far more height, claiming that a little bit of grass around the base of the building offsets the looming structure.
None of this would work without Valencia’s outstanding network of parks and squares. Ottawa’s core is ill-favoured in that respect. That was apparent when the National Capital Commission had to close the Queen Elizabeth Driveway during the pandemic, so that stir-crazy downtown residents would have some place to go.The Arts Centre, part of the ‘City of Arts and Sciences,’ is a huge tourist draw in Valencia.The Turia Park is the city’s crown jewel.
