The study, published Wednesday in Science Advances, was conducted by scientists from Dalhousie and 12 other post-secondary institutions in the U.S., Australia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Estonia, Chile, Sweden and the U.K.

Since 2018, the movement has held 1,576 cleanups across 84 different countries. “Instead of you and I or other taxpayers paying for municipal waste collection and recycling, we should be getting the producers who are most responsible for this waste to deal with it at the end of its life,” said Walker. “I think this study really does highlight which of the major corporations are responsible.”
“Only nine per cent of global plastic ever produced has ever been recycled. What happened to the other 91 per cent? It’s clearly just not happening.”The results of the study also have potential to put more pressure on government bodies, says Walker.
