CORNER BROOK, N.L. — An application by Corner Brook Pulp and Paper to harvest 330 hectares of forest in the City of Corner Brook’s watershed failed to get the support it needed when it came up for a decision at a city council meeting May 27.

The issue was discussed by the city’s watershed management committee, which identified a list of items that required further investigation. Following that, the committee recommended approval of the application, subject to a number of conditions.Coun. Pamela Gill presented a lengthy statement to council outlining questions she has about the proposed development.

“In fact, I would like to suggest that we implement a moratorium on all wood harvests within the entirety of the watershed until we get the answers, and we review our own watershed management plan so that it is up-to-date and reassessed using current-day information,” she said to applause from the gallery. As deputy mayor Linda Chaisson and councillors Vaughn Granter and Charles Pender weighed in, it was clear they also did not support the request.

“I’m not totally convinced that it’s a bad thing, as I’m not really convinced that it’s a good thing either,” he said.Mayor Jim Parsons chairs the city’s watershed management committee, which he said consists of professionals who are active in watershed management and the document the staff prepared reflects the committee’s recommendations and is very thorough.
