Whitecaps’ co-owner Jeff Mallett has flown into town three times in the past week alone to meet with his team’s fan groups and a few, carefully chosen members of the media

The Vancouver Whitecaps have finally publicly addressed the abuse allegations that have dogged the Major League Franchise for months, but it’s done little the quell the upsurge in outrage triggered in February after a blog post alleging years of bullying, intimidation and sexually inappropriate behaviour by a former women’s coach went viral.

No members from The Vancouver Sun and Province, CBC, News1130 or other outlets who had previously written on the story were informed of the meeting. Inquiries to the team on the matter, along with other questions, were not returned. Sabourin-Hertzog had requested that Mallett meet with media publicly, and didn’t feel Wednesday’s meeting with rights-holder CTV was enough.

The fan groups had been protesting the team’s handling of a series of allegations of abuse and coach misconduct levied by members of the 2008 women’s Whitecaps and U20 Canadian teams, who were coached by the same person. There are now 15 women who have either come out publicly or put their name to a group statement that accused the coach of inappropriate touching, sexually charged texting and bullying.
