Move comes as the province sets targets for new housing in the municipality
An Oak Bay Avenue condominium project previously turned down by Oak Bay council has received unanimous approval, as the municipality increasingly comes under pressure from the province to green-light more housing.
“People are just desperate,” she said. “There’s nowhere to go in Oak Bay. They want to get out of their big house, they want to stay in the village.”The development was turned down twice, first in 2017 and most recently in April 2022 by a council vote of 4-3. Oak Bay Mayor Kevin Murdoch said the Quest project will likely count toward the municipality’s provincial housing target.
Murdoch said it’s not unusual for development applications to come to council, be turned down, then come back and get approved. Colpman said construction could start by June and take 12 to 16 months, “given the current climate of trades and availability.”
