“That’s an essential service,” McNeilly told the House. “I need to know: Is that moving on November 20th?” In June of 2021, the shelter was relocated to Smith Lodge, a supportive housing location on Weymouth Street. Its operation was later transferred to Social Development and Housing.Speaking to reporters after question period on Nov. 4, MacKay said the Deacon House beds would be moved to the Park Street mobile housing units.

"This is a way to keep all transitional beds in one location," MacKay said. "Deacon House no longer exists. Even though it's called Deacon House, it's in Smith Lodge now." McNeilly said he has talked to an individual with mobility issues who is “very, very scared” about the closure of Deacon House."This is not a plan. This is just a reshuffling, something that benefits government," McNeilly said. "We need to add to the stock of transitional housing beds at Queens Arms and various other places because they haven't managed that program properly.

In September, staff with MacKay’s department told a standing committee this system does not track “hidden homeless” – individuals who are couch-surfing or staying with family or friends.
