. It seemed like the best and most logical site since the death rattle for the aging facility on Euston Street clearly signalled its imminent demise for a variety of reasons. A small but dedicated CCC group tried and failed to gain traction within city hall. Cody Banks was another option but was plagued by a variety of roadblocks. And there were similar obstacles at Belvedere where curling went hand in hand with golf for decades.
And what followed? Inaction, lack of vision, bandaid solutions, and lurching from one disastrous decision to the next.Citizens can clearly recall the equally inexcusable fiascos surrounding the Simmons project. First, the narrow scope of new construction was clearly designed to exclude an attached curling facility. And once curlers were shown the road across the bridge, money suddenly became a careless second thought.
And the council wasn’t the only body to shun the CCC. Canada Games decision-makers snubbed the city club at its earliest opportunity, more than four years ago, as Charlottetown was excluded from any curling connection to the 2023 Winter Games. The 1991 Winter Games in Charlottetown saw a sizeable investment in the CCC, which enabled the club to keep going for over 25 more years.
