As a cyclist, he supports the addition of a mulit-use active transportation pathway. - George MelitidesCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The City of Charlottetown has some updates planned for one of its busiest streets.

“That is one of the worst intersections in terms of vehicle collisions. So, we want to do a big improvement, adding the proper turn lanes, try to reduce that anxiety for drivers that are trying to make the light,” said Adams. At the open house, there were safety concerns about cyclist and pedestrians sharing the three-metre-wide multi-use pathway.

A design image from EXP Services shows how University Avenue could look with a divided median and multi-use pathway running along the west side of the avenue. - ContributedUPEI post-graduate student Mary Beth MacLean, who attended the open house to learn more about the project and offer her input, asked if there would be benches along the active transportation corridor for seniors.

“When I look at University Avenue, the numbers of vehicles are increasing. So, we have to push active transportation, we have to push transit, we have to push other ways of moving people from point A to point B.”
