Glace Bay senior says the grant was approved in January.

Tony Hurley, 68, sits in his motorized wheelchair at the top of the stairs to the front door of his Glace Bay home on Thursday. Without a wheelchair ramp, Hurley can't get down the steps and hasn't been further than this deck since he was released from hospital in October 2022. NICOLE SULLIVAN/CAPE BRETON POST - Nicole SullivanGLACE BAY, N.S. — A Glace Bay senior hasn't been able to go farther than the front deck of his house since October 2022.

"That's the way I feel about politics. They go around saying they want seniors to live in their own homes but when you try to get something, you can't get it." After being released from hospital in Halifax, Hurley was admitted to a rehabilitation facility there where he stayed until Jan. 13, 2022, when he was transferred to Glace Bay Hospital.

" said he will write the letter but didn't know how to do it because I couldn't go home without the ramp but it seemed they wouldn't give me the grant to build the ramp until he said when I could go home. He said it was a catch-22," Hurley recalled. Hurley said this was given to the department in August 2022, however, when he called the department in September he was told they hadn't heard from the contractor since June.

This is when Hurley reached out to MLA John White's office for help, which he has found equally frustrating. Hurley said he hasn't spoken with White but has spoken with his constituent assistants who have taken his information and said they would speak to the department regarding his situation.
