ICYMI: Scam alert.
Cape Breton police are warning of scam calls claiming to be a lawyer for a relative that has been arrested. Stock photoSYDNEY, N.S. — Cape Breton police are warning residents about fraudulent phone calls circulating in the area.
Cape Breton Regional police said officers responded to three different reports on Feb. 9 about calls from individuals posing as lawyers and claiming a recipient's family member had been arrested and needed bail money. The caller threatened that telling anyone about the request could prevent the relative from being granted bail.
Police urged residents to be cautious of these phishing scams, which can result in financial and identity theft. Residents are advised to hang up immediately and verify the authenticity of any suspicious calls by contacting the organization directly. If the call is about a family member, residents should get in touch with that person to confirm their well-being. Any suspicious emails or text messages should also be verified and reported to the police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
