Norton, who debuted for England in 2009 and retired after the 2022 Canada Sevens, has the most tries in World Rugby Sevens Series history.

Two veteran teammates — Alex Davis and Tom Bowen — were alongside him in the lineup, but the team was dominated by youth, something Norton laughed at himself about.

“I had him as an 18 year old, just out of school, playing internationally in the Dubai Invitational invitation playing with Samurai 7s, with some other soon-to-be-stars of the series who were touring overseas for the first time: Tim Mikkleson and Scott Curry,” he recalled. “You could see he had the speed and elusiveness and just needed to work on his physical development and his defence.

Hirayama’s longtime teammate Harry Jones said Norton was a crowd pleaser for as long as he could remember.
