Canada is aiming for 9th place at the 2022 Canada Sevens.

The Canadians beat Japan 29-5 in a ninth-place quarterfinal Sunday morning, setting them up for a semifinal clash with Scotland, one of the teams they’re battling to stay afloat in the series.

All in all, the Canadians will have to finish ahead of Japan and, likely, either Scotland or Wales. Canada came into the weekend with 24 points, tied with Wales and one back of the Scots. Japan had 21 points on the weekend but will drop further behind Canada now. Kenya came into the tournament up a dozen points on Canada and Wales, but will finish the weekend a little closer to Canada because they lost their opening match of the day to Ireland 21-14.

“He’ll tackle anything except for gluten,” Canadian captain Phil Berna quipped post-game. It was a game-defining moment, one that energized the crowd and the home team as well.
