With a big crowd expected at B.C. Place this weekend, Canada just hopes to keep the home crowd entertained.

Of the 13 men who will wear red this weekend at B.C. Place, just two can really be considered veterans — 24-year-old Jake Thiel and 26-year-old Phil Berna.

The crowd at last September’s tournament was small, with the province still limiting crowd capacity. This weekend’s won’t burst past 30,000 like it has in years past, but organizers are hopeful to hit 27,000, full capacity for the lower bowl.Article content “Results-wise, it’s been a difficult year, but each tournament we kind of build on and hopefully this is where we’re going to hit our peak and keep building and keep getting better,” Thiel said.

Retaining possession and building some flow to their game, while pushing aside mistakes, is the path forward. Cooper Coats, a speedy and crafty back also missed the tournament and is back in the lineup this weekend. He hasn’t played many tournaments, but head coach Henry Paul still thinks of him as an leader, like Thiel and Berna, who will help guide his team towards the solid, medal-contending group they hope to be in a couple years’ time.
