The British Columbia Ministry of Forests has extended the deferral of old-growth logging in the Fairy Creek watershed, continuing protection until September 30, 2026. This decision reaffirms the government's commitment to working with First Nations and prioritizing reconciliation in forest management. The Ministry also condemned recent reports of tree spiking in the area, emphasizing the safety of forestry workers. Fairy Creek has been the site of significant protests against old-growth logging, and this extension allows for continued dialogue and planning regarding the long-term management of this ecologically valuable area.

The British Columbia Ministry of Forests has announced an extension to the deferral of old-growth logging in the Fairy Creek watershed, continuing protection for this ecologically significant area. Forests Minister Ravi Parmar emphasized the government's commitment to reconciliation and collaboration with First Nations in managing forest resources. 'I am working to put people and communities back at the heart of forestry,' said Parmar.

'True, lasting and meaningful reconciliation begins with partnering and working with First Nations. Together, we can build a strong, robust and sustainable forest sector for the next 100 years.' The deferral extension, which applies to the same forest lands as those deferred in June 2021, will provide temporary protection until September 30, 2026. This will allow for further discussions and planning regarding the long-term management of Fairy Creek. This deferral will also continue the strong partnership between the Ministry of Forests and the Pacheedaht First Nation, whose traditional territory encompasses the Fairy Creek watershed. The protected area encompasses nearly 1,200 hectares of Crown land within the watershed. Parmar also addressed reports of tree spiking in the Fairy Creek area, north east of Port Renfrew. 'Last week, I was notified that there are reports of tree spiking in the Fairy Creek area of southern Vancouver Island,' he stated. 'Spiking a tree, or even attempting to, is a dangerous criminal activity that puts the health and safety of B.C.'s forestry workers at risk. These reports are incredibly alarming and I condemn this criminal behaviour.' The RCMP is currently investigating these reports, with the forestry licensee and the local First Nation notified. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 and reference file number: NA25-2275. Fairy Creek has been at the center of numerous protests against old-growth logging, with over 1,000 protesters arrested at the site in February 2022. These protests have been recognized as one of the largest acts of civil disobedience in Canadian history. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Forests emphasized its ongoing work with First Nations and title holders across the province to protect old-growth forests. They stated that action has been taken on all 14 recommendations from the 2020 Old Growth Strategic Review. The ministry also assured that their forest landscape planning (FLP) process, a key component of their old-growth strategy, would continue to provide opportunities for collaboration between Indigenous and provincial government leadership. Fifteen FLP projects are currently underway
