India suspends Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan after Pahalgam attack
NEW DELHI In a major escalation of tensions, India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan following a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Indian-occupied Kashmir, which left at least 26 people dead and 17 injured.
The attack, described as the worst on civilians in the region since 2000, targeted male tourists, with survivors claiming the gunmen deliberately spared women. India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced a series of retaliatory measures, including the closure of the Attari border post, expulsion of Pakistani defence staff from the High Commission in New Delhi, and the cancellation of all SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme visas for Pakistani nationals.India blames cross-border terrorism for the attack, which came days after peaceful local elections.has vowed a “loud and clear” response, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh pledged that both perpetrators and planners would be held accountable.A National Security Committee meeting has been convened by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to decide Pakistan’s response.
