Williams Lake city council has voted to continue the tradition of Wrestling Day on January 2, 2025. The locally-observed holiday has been celebrated quietly since the 1940s and officially since 1959, giving residents a day of rest and recovery after New Year's festivities.

The city of Williams Lake will once again be marking the locals-only holiday of Wrestling Day on January 2, 2025.

City council passed the motion during their regular council meeting on Dec. 3, 2024, to mark the municipal holiday once again.Wrestling Day is unique to Williams Lake, and is celebrated, or perhaps more accurately, quietly passed, and has been officially marked since 1959. But Williams Lake has closed up shops on January 2 as a day for rest and recovery since the early 1940s at least, and the idea for the holiday is credited to local merchants William Sidney “Sid” Western and Alistair “Al” Mackenzie.

The holiday gives many local citizens and merchants alike, the opportunity to take one more day to recover if their new year's celebrations were too vigorous, or to enjoy one more day of outdoor or indoor personal pastimes. Either way, have a Happy Wrestling Day on Jan. 2 Williams Lake, courtesy of your local city council. With files from Massimo Calabrese
