In the early days of artificial intelligence, Roger Thompson became fascinated by his professor's use of the new technology to test assumptions about organizational effectiveness.

He later realized that these assumptions were shaky when reviewing research unearthed by AI. Curious to explore the topic for his doctoral thesis, he discovered limited research on the perceived effectiveness of meetings from the employee's perspective. To address this, he conducted a study on a 1,200-person company by implementing an anonymous survey and follow-up interviews to measure the value of one-on-one meetings.

His key finding was that a higher perceived effectiveness of one-on-ones led to a lower intention of employees to leave. This confirmed Thompson's belief that one-on-one meetings serve as a retention mechanism
