Jeff Vervaeke, 44, was participating in a cancer research fundraiser called \u00277 days in May\u0027 when he was fatally struck on the shoulder of the road

On May 27, 2018, the cyclists were travelling on Bath Road, and had nearly reached Kingston, when the lead group had to pull off to the side of the road after one of their members hit a pothole, fell off their bike and suffered a possible head injury.

“He was honestly, one of the most kind hearted, sincere and ethical people you would ever meet,” said Kim Carey Williams, Vervaeke’s partner, in a victim impact statement. She said that “late night whip cream fights” and “crazy jet-ski rides” were among the “amazing memories” she’d shared with the 44-year-old, his daughter and her own two children.Article content

Erin Townley, one of the cyclists who was hit by the Nissan and suffered serious injuries, told the court that she remembered the sound of the car’s impact, and then everything went black. When she woke up, she was holding her fractured right arm. She showed a photo of Vervaeke the day he left on the “7 Days in May” charity ride, saying that he’d been so excited about the challenge. She then showed a photo of her son in the hospital, telling the court it had been “heart wrenching” to “helplessly stand by” as Vervaeke lay unresponsive.
