Pte. Buckam Singh's grave was discovered in Kitchener by SikhMuseum.com’s curator, Sandeep Singh Brar.
A special remembrance ceremony will be held Sunday at the gravesite of Pte. Buckam Singh in Kitchener, Ont. Historian Sandeep Singh Brar, with the Sikh Museum, says Singh's story is an inspirational one and he wants more people to hear it.Historian Sandeep Singh Brar found a war medal for Pte. Buckam Singh in a British pawn shop. It led him to find out more about Singh's service to Canada, including locating Singh's grave in Kitchener's Mount Hope Cemetery.
"He worked on a farm and he's one of the first documented Sikh actually living in Ontario at the time," Singh Brar told CBC Kitchener-Waterloo's Craig Norris, host ofSingh's first name has been spelled different ways throughout the years including: Bukum, Buk Am and Bukkan. The SikhMuseum.com, which Singh Brar curates, spells it Buckam.
This photo of Buckam Singh, although his name is spelled incorrectly, appeared in the Toronto Telegram in 1915. The photo is now part of the page dedicated to Singh on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial. While recovering in hospital from his second injury in 1916, Singh contracted tuberculosis and spent about a year and a half in various hospitals in England before being brought back to Canada. He said anyone is invited to attend the ceremony and it can be "kind of an eye opener" for them, as it was for himself.
