An Ontario woman lost $6,000 in a scam after she believed she was paying bail for a friend who had been arrested in an accident. The scammers instructed her to send the money through a courier who would use a specific code word. Police warn that individuals held for bail should never contact you asking for cash to bail themselves out, as this is not how the legal system works.

Police say the woman was given instructions on how to send the cash by someone claiming to be the friend’s lawyer, as a courier was going to come by to pick it up. She needed to know what code word the courier would use to ensure they were handing money to the right person, police add.Shortly after, police say the victim called her friend and realized she had just been scammed. Police did not provide any suspect information.
