A woman accused of stabbing a police officer at Atlantic Place on Wednesday has been deemed fit to face several serious charges against her.
51-year-old Irene Hutchings appeared in provincial court this morning, constantly talking and yelling, saying she wanted to talk to media who were in the courtroom. The judge questioned whether another psychiatric assessment might be necessary, but agreed to set the case over until next Wednesday for a bail hearing.
Hutchings is charged with aggravated assault against a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon or causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon or imitation, assault, and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. It stems from a disturbance Wednesday afternoon at the food court in Atlantic Place, during which an RNC constable was stabbed in the arm as he tried to intervene in a dispute between two women.The officer was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
