LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MAY 01: Halsey and BTS perform onstage during the 2019 Billboard Music Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 01, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. While they have been a favorite in the K-pop space for at least half a decade now, it was only about two years ago that BTS began making noticeable moves in the U.S. market. Since their first appearances on mainstream charts, the septet has been unstoppable, and they continue to reach new highs with every subsequent release.
They were already one of the most popular bands in the country even when they only performed in Korean, but BTS has also benefited from partnering with English-speaking Western artists, most of whom are from the United States.
BTS' first major hit in the U.S. with an American act came in 2017 when their song “Mic Drop” broke into the top 40 on the Hot 100, eventually peaking at No. 28. The track featured DJ and producer Steve Aoki, and a later remix also featured rapper Desiigner. That risk turned out to be one that paid off, and in 2018, BTS stepped back into the studio with Aoki once again, this time for a single fronted by the EDM pioneer. “Waste It on Me,” which was featured on his album, was a minor hit, only rising to No. 89 on the Hot 100, but that was still a win for all involved. Their own single “Idol,” which featured Nicki Minaj on the version that was sent to American radio stations, helped power their albumto No.
In 2019, BTS has already released three singles featuring Western pop acts, with a trio of women contributing their talents to new tunes from the Korean superstars. First up was “Boy With Luv,” the big smash from, the seven-member band’s third chart-topping album. The track, which features Halsey on the hook, was a true hit, peaking at No. 8 on the Hot 100.
