“A strong Pacific frontal system is approaching Vancouver Island this morning. Strong and gusty southeast winds will pick up this morning, reach peak strength through the afternoon hours and then diminish this evening,” Environment Canada said in its warning. The weather agency warns that the strong winds could toss loose objects or snap limbs from trees, and also result in power outages.
Meanwhile, the agency issued less severe special weather statements for Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands due to the “strong and gusty” southeast winds. While Environment Canada warned that the winds may impact travel plans, as of noon Sunday, BC Ferries was reporting that conditions had improved enough for service to resume on some routes that were previously at risk of being cancelled out of Campbell River and Haida Gwaii. The power provider said crews were either assigned, en route or on site for all three of the outages, two of which were caused by trees falling on to power lines.Jeff Lawrence is the Managing Digital News Editor for CHEKNews.
