‘They were very high on my list’
QMJHL Draft: Selected in the first round, No. 11 overall, by Cape Breton in 2022
The 16-year-old has appeared in 38 games with the team, posting seven goals and 18 points along with 15 penalty minutes. Statistics do not include Friday’s game against the Moncton Wildcats.“I look at it as there’s lots of kids who would love to be in the spot I’m in today. Even when I’m going through a rough patch or something, it’s an opportunity to be in the rink every day with these coaches and players and take it one day, one practice and one game at a time.
While there’s plenty of time for him to be an offensive producer in the league, Shields has never had a problem finding the back of the net or the score sheet in his career. “I like to play offence, who doesn’t like to score goals?” laughed Shields. “It’s really fun to be an offensive guy and that’s something I’ve been able to do for all my career to date and hopefully that continues at the major junior level.”
Shields admits the decision to leave the Wildcats program and Atlantic Canada wasn’t an easy choice but it’s one he’s now grateful to have made. With plenty of resources and facilities through the program, Shields believes his time with the prep school team did in fact help with his development but also taught him the value of being a good person and life skills.
Shawinigan enters the game coming off a 6-3 loss to the Halifax Mooseheads on Thursday. The club is 6-4-0-0 in their last 10 games.
