Two years after a blaze destroyed most of Lytton, residents were once again on alert this week.

Lytton Village on fire on June 30.In June 2021, Lytton saw the temperature climb to 49 C, the highest ever recorded in Canada, shortly before fire consumed the town. Again this week, much of B.C. was experiencing unusually high temperatures, with Lytton recordingon Monday, the highest anywhere in the nation this year. The following day, Lytton hit 42.1 C.

On Thursday night and throughout Friday, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and the Lytton First Nation issued a series of evacuation orders and alerts around the region. Highway 1 between Hope and Lytton was closed Friday. “Everybody is traumatized from the fire that we had in Lytton that burned the town two years ago,” Phillips said Friday. He was in nearby Ashcroft to pick up firefighting supplies and planning to return to his community to protect whatever he could.
