Detections prompted closure of U.S. border to fresh potatoes. In the end, potato wart spread to four additional fields.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency restrictions put in place after potato wart finds in 2021 still bar sales of seed potatoes off-Island. - Stu Neatby/SaltWireLife in the Victoria Park Homeless Encampment | SaltWireAlmost two years after an export ban that resulted in the destruction of hundreds of millions of pounds of P.E.I. potatoes, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has concluded its investigation into two detections of potato wart in the fall of 2021.

"The risks associated with the transmission of potato wart from fresh potatoes from PEI remain negligible when appropriate risk mitigation measures are in place and followed," the Agency said in a statement posted August 18. Shipments of fresh potatoes were allowed to resume export to the United States on April 1, 2022 after a four-month ban that winter. An estimated 240 million pounds of potatoes were destroyed by P.E.I. farmers as a result of the ban.

CFIA has maintained restrictions on seed potatoes, which are grown to be planted in the ground, are still needed because they carry a higher risk of spreading the pest than fresh potatoes."As a proud Islander and a former potato grower myself, I understand that the past couple of years have been challenging for our potato growers, packers, processors, and shippers," MacAulay said in an emailed statement.
