Paul W.S. Anderson directed four of the six Resident Evil movies starring Milla Jovovich, but he had a good reason to skip out on parts two and three.
Paul W.S. Anderson directed every other entry in the Resident Evil film franchise, so why did he pass on the second and third movies? Horror legend George A Romero was set to helm the Resident Evil movie in the late '90s, but disagreements with Constantin Films over its level of gore led to him being fired. Anderson - who had already directed hit video game adaptation Mortal Kombat - was already working on a very Resident Evil-inspired screenplay titled The Undead.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Anderson pitched his film as a prequel to the Resident Evil games, and it just about works with that take in mind. However, later movies moved further and further away from the source material, with Anderson writing and producing each outing. The story instead remixed elements from Capcom's games but focused on the journey of Milla Jovovich's Alice, an original creation for the Anderson saga.
Paul WS Anderson Was Too Busy For Resident Evil 2 & 3 Anderson's career wasn't in a great place prior to 2002's Resident Evil. While it's a cult favorite now, Event Horizon was a costly bomb upon release in 1997, while his sci-fi action flick Soldier starring Kurt Russell did even worse. The success of Resident Evil made him in demand again, and he was quickly hired to direct the long-awaited Alien Vs Predator.
Anderson had been in development hell for years on his remake of Death Race, with his film originally been designed as a Tom Cruise vehicle. Cruise eventually exited Death Race, while Jason Statham came onboard to star instead. Anderson chose to direct Death Race instead of Extinction, though in a 2017 chat with THR, he stated "There were a couple of the movies I didn’t direct, which I think given my druthers, I would have done.
Why Anderson Didn't Return For Welcome To Raccoon City The movie franchise eventually rebooted with 2021's Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, which had no connection with Anderson's series. Neither the director nor Jovovich had any creative involvement with Welcome To Raccoon City, and as Anderson told Screen Rant in 2020, he was ready to move on. Says the director "... I think after six movies and $1.
