Curated Instagram accounts are creating a new platform for powerful affirmations and bringing vast communities together in one place

When Nancy Pelosi emerged from a particularly gruelling conversation at the White House last December, she was photographed wearing a funnel-necked, tomato-red Max Mara coat. Her face pulled into a tight smile, Pelosi’s vibe was polished yet pissed off – the exact opposite of Trumpian demeanour – and the next day, the Instagram account “Excellent Coats on Irritated Women” was started by New York-based writer and comedian Sara Benincasa.
The account may initially seem counterintuitive to one of the core issues of feminism, in that it partly defines its heroines through how they dress. Given the momentum of the “Ask Her More” movement on the red carpet, which launched in 2014 – when women urged on-air personalities to go beyond the name of the gown’s designer and prompt deeper interviews – it would be understandable to hesitate in crafting a narrative of female empowerment while highlighting their attire.
