Share to linkedin As someone who has dedicated her career to breaking down systemic barriers for women at all levels, I was disheartened to read Forbes’of “America’s Most Innovative Leaders.
” The team that put this together believed they were using objective criteria but the resulting list, and its inclusion of just one woman, should have made glaringly clear to them a lack of diversity. Rather than spotlighting the most dynamic minds in business, it perpetuated damaging and misleading stereotypes.
The list as constructed failed to capture those who are today’s most innovative leaders. The backlash generated around its shortcomings on social media and elsewhere was intense and warranted. Many of the sentiments expressed were ones I shared. I’m appreciative of those voices that hold us accountable and ensure that we’re working to eliminate pervasive barriers rather than compound them.
Forbes learned a painful lesson that will ultimately help us in achieving our mission of opportunity for all. As the fourth generation and the first woman in the Forbes family to be part of this company, I’m personally steadfast in this commitment. The leadership across Forbes has long been as well. That’s what made this moment all the more painful and a reminder that there’s always work to be done.
Ultimately, it was clear that the list criteria itself had shortcomings that should have been factored in at its inception. “Our methodology was flawed at a minimum when it came to being more expansive with who was eligible to be ranked,”“Forbes’ brand stems from inclusive, entrepreneurial capitalism—the idea that free markets, open to all, have proved the best-ever system to produce wealth and happiness and solve societal problems,” added Randall.
